Regular file-level duplicate finders match on byte-for-byte identity — same file, different folder. Duplicate photo finders go further: they match visually similar images (same photo in JPG and PNG, different resolutions, slight crops).

How visual duplicate matching works
Instead of comparing file bytes, photo finders build a perceptual hash (a fingerprint) of each image. Identical images (same camera snap saved twice) hash identically. Visually similar images (same photo downsampled, re-cropped, re-saved as PNG) hash very close. The tool groups matches by hash distance and lets you pick which copy to keep.

Before running any of them
Back up the photo folder first. Visual matchers can flag a genuinely different photo as a near-duplicate (two similar portraits from the same shoot), and blind deletion is not recoverable if you empty the Recycle Bin.
- always preview each match group
- keep the highest-resolution copy (usually the original RAW or JPG, not a PNG export)
- send to Recycle Bin, not "permanent delete," until you confirm nothing important was lost
