3GP
Also known as: .3gp file, 3GPP, how to open 3gp, phone video format
3GP is a compact video container created for early 3G mobile phones, designed to keep file sizes and bandwidth low. It is largely outdated now, so 3GP files are usually old clips recorded on or sent from older phones.
- Container made for early 3G phones
- Low bitrate and resolution by design
- Largely outdated; mostly old recordings
Made for early mobile
3GP (from the 3GPP mobile standards group) was built so that phones on early 3G networks could record, store, and send video over limited bandwidth. It wraps low-bitrate H.263 or H.264 video with AMR or AAC audio in a small container.
You will mostly run into .3gp files as old recordings or MMS video messages. They play in VLC and most modern players, though some apps may need them converted to MP4 first.
The storage angle
3GP clips are small by design and low resolution, so individually they take little space. The format’s low quality is the trade-off it made for portability on old networks.
If you want broader compatibility or to combine old 3GP clips with newer footage, converting them to MP4 is straightforward — the file stays small but becomes easier to play and edit.
