Background removal
Also known as: remove background, cut out background, isolate subject
Background removal separates the main subject of a photo from everything behind it, leaving a clean cutout you can place on a transparent, white, or new background. Modern tools do this automatically by detecting the subject’s edges, which is ideal for product shots, profile pictures, and graphics.
- Detects the subject and erases everything behind it
- Output is PNG or WebP so it stays transparent
- Hair and fine edges are the hardest to cut cleanly
How automatic removal works
The tool analyzes the image to find the subject — a person, product, or object — and erases the surrounding pixels, replacing them with transparency. The result is usually saved as a PNG or WebP, the formats that support an alpha channel, so the cutout can sit cleanly over any background.
Detailed edges like hair, fur, or fine product textures are the hardest part. Good results come from a clear subject, even lighting, and contrast between the subject and the background.
Common uses
E-commerce sellers use it to put products on a plain white background. Designers use cutouts in collages, thumbnails, and marketing graphics. You can also swap a busy background for a solid color to make a subject stand out.
