IT (Impulse Tracker)

Also known as: IT file, Impulse Tracker module, .it music, impulse tracker

IT (Impulse Tracker) is one of the most advanced classic tracker module formats. It extends MOD and XM with more channels, finer effects, and features like note-cut and resonant filters, while keeping files compact.

  • Advanced classic tracker module format
  • Stores samples plus a note pattern, not audio
  • Popular in chiptune and demoscene communities

The high end of tracker formats

Like other module formats, an IT file stores instrument samples and a pattern of notes rather than rendered audio. Impulse Tracker pushed the concept furthest, with many channels, advanced envelopes, and effects that gave composers fine control.

It is widely regarded as the most capable of the classic DOS-era trackers and remains popular in the chiptune and demoscene communities.

Working with IT files

OpenMPT (a spiritual successor) and VLC play and edit IT files. As with all modules, playback can vary slightly between players because they interpret the same instructions.

Convert to MP3 or WAV to produce a standard, portable audio file.
