NEF (Nikon RAW)
Also known as: Nikon RAW, NEF file, how to open NEF, .nef
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon’s RAW image format, storing the unprocessed sensor data from Nikon cameras. Files are large (often 20–50 MB) and need Nikon’s software, Lightroom/Adobe Camera Raw, or conversion to DNG or JPEG to edit and share.

What a NEF file is
NEF is the proprietary RAW format Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras write when you shoot RAW instead of JPEG. It records the raw light values from the sensor, an embedded JPEG preview, and EXIF metadata, so all the exposure and color decisions stay editable later.
That flexibility costs space: a NEF holds far more data than a JPEG of the same scene, so RAW shooting fills memory cards, phone backups, and cloud storage much faster.
How to open and convert NEF
NEF opens in Nikon’s free NX Studio, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Apple Photos/Preview on recent macOS, and most full-featured editors. Basic image viewers often cannot display it.
Export to JPEG for everyday sharing, or convert NEF to DNG to keep RAW editing flexibility in Adobe’s open container. Delete the original NEF only once you are sure you no longer need to re-edit it.
