Offload App

Offloading an app removes the app itself to free space but keeps its documents and data, so reinstalling restores everything where you left off. Deleting an app removes both the app and its data permanently.

Offload App

Also known as: offload vs delete, offload unused apps

Offloading an app removes the app itself to free space but keeps its documents and data, so reinstalling restores everything where you left off. Deleting an app removes both the app and its data permanently.

  • Offload keeps data; delete does not
  • Offloaded apps show a cloud badge
  • Can be automated in App Store settings

Offload vs delete

Offload is the gentler option. In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tapping an app shows both Offload App and Delete App. Offload reclaims the app’s install size while leaving its saved data behind; the icon stays on your Home Screen with a small cloud badge.

Delete removes the app and all of its data. Use offload for big apps you use occasionally, and delete for apps whose data you no longer need.

Automatic offloading

Turn on Settings > App Store > Offload Unused Apps to let iOS automatically offload apps you have not opened in a while when space runs low. Your data is preserved, and the app re-downloads on tap if it is still on the store.
