Pages (Apple)
Also known as: .pages file, Apple Pages document, iWork Pages
A .pages file is a document created in Apple Pages, the word processor in Apple’s iWork suite. The format is Apple-only — Windows and Android cannot open it natively — so Pages exports to Word, PDF, or other formats for sharing.
- Native word-processor format of Apple’s iWork suite
- Apple-only — no native Windows or Android app
- Export to DOCX or PDF to share outside Apple devices
What a Pages file is
Pages is Apple’s free word processor for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with a browser version at iCloud.com. A .pages file is actually a package (a folder bundle) containing the document text, styles, and any embedded media.
The format is proprietary to Apple. There is no official Pages app for Windows or Android, so recipients on those platforms need an exported copy or the iCloud web version.
Sharing a Pages document
To send a Pages file to someone outside the Apple ecosystem, use Share or Export and choose Word (DOCX) for an editable copy or PDF for a fixed layout. PDF is the safest choice when you only need the recipient to read or print it.
Pages can also open and edit DOCX files directly, so it works as a Word alternative on Apple devices without buying Microsoft Office.
