ProRAW File Size

Also known as: proraw storage, proraw huge files, proraw file size

Apple ProRAW saves a high-bit-depth DNG that keeps far more image data than a HEIC, so a single ProRAW shot is many times larger than a normal photo. This is why ProRAW capture fills iPhone storage quickly.

  • ProRAW saves a high-bit-depth DNG with minimal compression, so each file is many times larger than a HEIC.
  • 48 MP ProRAW on newer iPhones makes individual files larger still, often tens of megabytes each.
  • ProRAW is a toggle in Camera (RAW control); Preserve Settings can keep it on across launches.

What ProRAW stores

Apple ProRAW (available on iPhone Pro models) writes a DNG (Digital Negative) file that combines Apple's computational photography with the wide latitude of a raw capture. Instead of a finished, heavily compressed image, it keeps high-bit-depth sensor data, a richer tonal range, and minimal compression so you can push exposure, white balance, and detail hard in editing.

All of that extra data has a cost. A standard HEIC photo is a compact, finished image of a few megabytes, while a single ProRAW DNG is typically tens of megabytes, and the resolution option on newer iPhones (up to 48 MP ProRAW) pushes individual files larger still. A short shooting session in ProRAW can consume more space than hundreds of ordinary photos.

Why it fills storage so fast

ProRAW is a capture format meant for editing, not for routine snapshots. Because each frame is so large, leaving it enabled for everyday photography quietly burns through gigabytes. iOS does not turn it on automatically for every shot; it is a toggle in the Camera app (the RAW / ProRAW control) and is gated behind Settings > Camera > Formats > Apple ProRAW & Resolution Control.

If you only need ProRAW for specific deliberate shots, turn the RAW control off between sessions. Note that Preserve Settings can keep ProRAW enabled across launches, so check Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings if you find large DNGs piling up unexpectedly.

Managing the bulk

ProRAW files are usually the single largest items in a camera roll, so they are prime targets when you need space. A cleaner that sorts photos by size makes it easy to spot stray DNGs, decide which raw shots you actually still need, and clear the rest, recovering a large amount of storage from just a handful of files.
