Recently Deleted is a holding area that keeps photos, videos, files, or messages for about 30 days after you delete them, so they can be recovered. The space is not freed until this folder is emptied or the 30 days pass.

  • Holds deleted items ~30 days
  • Space is reclaimed only after it is emptied
  • Exists separately in Photos, Files, Notes, and Mail

Why deleting does not free space right away

When you delete a photo, iOS moves it to Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted rather than erasing it. It still occupies storage there for roughly 30 days as a safety net against accidental deletion.

This is why your free space often does not change after a big delete: the files are queued for removal, not gone. To reclaim the space now, open Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All.

Where Recently Deleted appears

Several apps keep their own version: the Photos app, the Files app, Notes, Mail, and Messages each have a Recently Deleted or Trash area. Emptying one does not empty the others.
