What an SKP file holds

A .skp saves a SketchUp model: surfaces and edges, reusable components and groups, materials, and saved camera scenes. SketchUp’s push-pull modeling makes it a favorite for buildings and furniture.

SKP files are tied to the SketchUp version that made them, so very old files may need a newer SketchUp to open.

Opening an SKP file without SketchUp

You do not need a paid license just to look at a model. SketchUp Free in the browser opens .skp files with a Trimble account, and Trimble Connect plus the SketchUp Viewer apps for desktop and mobile display models without editing tools. Many 3D suites can also import SKP directly through their own importers.

If you only need to check what a file contains before deleting or archiving it, a viewer is the safer route: it cannot accidentally resave the model in a newer format version.

Version compatibility

Each SketchUp release historically wrote its own file version, and older SketchUp builds cannot open files saved by newer ones. Modern SketchUp offers File > Save as with a choice of older format versions, which is the standard fix when a collaborator on an older release cannot open your model.

Sharing SKP models

Opening SKP natively requires SketchUp or a compatible viewer. To use a model elsewhere, export to OBJ, FBX, DAE, or DWG/DXF for CAD workflows.

SKP files with many components and textures can reach hundreds of megabytes. Purging unused components and materials inside SketchUp before archiving keeps project folders manageable.
