Storage optimization
Also known as: optimize storage, offload originals, optimized storage cloud
Storage optimization is a feature that keeps full-resolution originals in the cloud while storing smaller, space-saving copies or previews on the device. You see and use your files normally, and the originals download on demand — so the device holds far less than the full library.
- Keeps originals in the cloud, previews on the device
- Downloads full quality on demand when you open a file
- Saves local space but needs internet and a cloud plan
How it frees space
Instead of keeping every full-size photo, video, or document on the device, optimization uploads the originals to the cloud and leaves lightweight versions locally. The device shows a preview or downscaled copy that is enough for everyday viewing.
When you open or share an item at full quality, the original is fetched from the cloud. Apple’s iCloud Photos calls this Optimize iPhone Storage; cloud drives offer similar on-demand or "free up space" modes.
Trade-offs to know
Optimization saves the most space on large media libraries, but it depends on an internet connection and an active cloud plan — originals you have not downloaded are not available offline, and they still count against your cloud quota.
It also is not a backup. Because the originals live in the cloud as your primary copy, keeping a separate backup is wise in case of accidental deletion or account issues.
