WMV (Windows Media Video)
Also known as: .wmv file, Windows Media Video, how to open wmv
WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft’s video format, once standard on Windows and in Windows Media Player. It plays natively on Windows but has limited support elsewhere, so WMV files often need converting for Macs, phones, and the web.

A Microsoft video format
WMV pairs Microsoft’s Windows Media Video codecs with the ASF container, and was for years the default for video on Windows and in Windows Media Player. It was widely used for downloads, presentations, and screen recordings on PCs.
The catch is compatibility: Macs, iPhones, Android devices, and browsers do not handle WMV well out of the box. VLC plays it on most platforms, but sharing a WMV widely usually means converting it first.
The storage angle
WMV files vary in size depending on the encoder and settings, but the bigger issue is usually portability rather than space. To use a WMV on a phone, the web, or a Mac, converting to MP4 (H.264) is the reliable path.
Converting also future-proofs old WMV archives, since MP4 with modern codecs plays everywhere and can be compressed if the originals are large.
