XM vs MOD

XM builds on the MOD concept of samples plus a note pattern, but adds far more flexibility: many more channels, instruments made of multiple samples with their own envelopes, and richer effects.

It became a staple of the PC tracker and demoscene era, offering more expressive music than classic Amiga MOD files while staying compact.

Playing and converting

OpenMPT, VLC, and various module players handle XM files. Because they store instructions rather than finished audio, the same file can sound slightly different across players.

Render to MP3 or WAV when you need a standard audio file to share or play on a phone.
