  • The reduction is a true greatest common divisor, so unusual dimensions give unusual ratios. 1366 by 768 reduces to 683:384, not 16:9, which is the honest answer: that panel size is not actually 16:9.
  • A solved dimension is rounded to two decimals, not to an integer. 1080 wide at 16:9 gives 607.5, and H.264 requires even width and height, so you round to 608 yourself before you export.
  • The gcd rounds its inputs before reducing, so decimal dimensions are rounded to whole numbers first. A 1.5 by 1 canvas reports 2:1 as the reduced ratio while the decimal ratio still correctly reads 1.5.
  • The presets are 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2 and 2:3. 4:5 is the tallest shape Instagram will show in feed, 9:16 is the full-screen story and Reels shape, and 1.91:1 for a link card is not on the list because it is not a clean integer ratio.

Because your dimensions are not 16:9. 1366 by 768 reduces to 683:384, which is very close to but not exactly 16:9. Common panel and export sizes are often slightly off, and the reduced ratio is the tool telling you the truth rather than rounding to the answer you expected.

What is the decimal ratio for?

Comparing shapes that do not reduce to comparable integers. 683:384 and 16:9 mean nothing side by side, but 1.7786 against 1.7778 tells you instantly that they are within a rounding error of each other. It is also the right number to compare against the 1.905 target of an Open Graph card.

Which ratio should I use for social?

4:5 for an Instagram feed post, since it is the tallest shape the feed will render. 9:16 for stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts. 16:9 for a YouTube thumbnail or an embedded video. About 1.91:1, which is 1200 by 630, for a link preview card on Facebook, LinkedIn or Slack.
