Is this the official IRS W-9 form?
Yes. This fills the official IRS Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024). You enter your details and the tool places them on the real form, then gives you the completed PDF to sign.
Is my Social Security Number safe?
Yes. The form is filled entirely in your browser, so your SSN and other details are never uploaded to a server. Nothing leaves your device.
Do I send my W-9 to the IRS?
No. A completed W-9 goes to whoever requested it, such as a client, payer or bank, not to the IRS. Sign and date it first, and keep a copy for yourself.
Do I use my SSN or EIN on a W-9?
Individuals and sole proprietors usually use their Social Security Number. Businesses use their Employer Identification Number. Choose the TIN type in the tool and it fills the correct boxes.
Is this the real IRS form?
Yes. The tool loads the official IRS Form W-9 PDF and fills its actual AcroForm fields, then flattens it. What you download is the government form with your details on it, not a lookalike.
Do I still have to sign it?
Yes. Part II requires your signature and the date, and the tool deliberately does not forge either. Print and sign, or use a PDF signing tool on the downloaded file.
Do I send the W-9 to the IRS?
No. It goes to the person or business that requested it, such as a client, a payer, or a bank. They keep it on file and use it to issue your 1099. Keep a copy for yourself.
SSN or EIN?
Individuals and most sole proprietors use their SSN. Businesses with an EIN use that. A single-member LLC that is disregarded for tax purposes normally reports the owner's SSN, not the LLC's EIN. If you are unsure, check the IRS instructions for Form W-9 rather than guessing.
Can I edit the PDF after downloading?
No. The form is flattened on export, so the values become part of the page. If you spot a typo, fill the form again and download a fresh copy.
