How to test a transparent PNG on different backgrounds
To test a transparent PNG, load it into the background tester and view it on each surface: white, black, a checkerboard, a solid color, and a two-stop linear gradient. A PNG that looks perfect on checkerboard can still break on a dark or warm background, so seeing it across surfaces is the fastest way to catch hidden edge issues.
The tester is built for inspection, not editing, so the source PNG is left untouched. If you want a record, you can export an optional contact sheet that captures the asset on all the test backgrounds at once.
All preview generation and export happen in your browser, so the PNG stays on your device and nothing is sent to a server.
- Load one transparent PNG
- Compare it on white, black, checker, solid, and gradient
- Look for halo, fringe, or matte edges
- Optionally export a contact sheet
Why background testing catches hidden problems
Transparent PNGs often carry faint halo or matte pixels left over from how they were cut out. These only become visible under contrast, which is why an asset can pass on a light background and fail on a dark one.
Testing the same PNG across white, black, and a gradient exposes soft edge issues quickly. The gradient view in particular helps reveal subtle fringing that flat backgrounds can hide, so you fix the asset before it ships.
