The arithmetic behind the suggestions
The model is deliberately simple. One sleep cycle is treated as 90 minutes, and 15 minutes is added for the time it takes to fall asleep. From a wake-up time, each suggested bedtime is that time minus the cycles multiplied by 90, minus another 15. From a bedtime, each wake time is that time plus 15 plus the cycles multiplied by 90.
Working through an example makes it concrete. To wake at 07:00, six cycles means going to bed at 21:45, five cycles at 23:15, four at 00:45, and three at 02:15. Going the other way from a bedtime of 23:00 gives wake times of 08:15 for six cycles, 06:45 for five, 05:15 for four, and 03:45 for three.
Five and six cycles are marked as the usual range because they correspond to roughly seven and a half to nine hours in bed, which is where most adult sleep guidance sits. Three and four cycles are offered for the nights when that is simply not available, not as a recommendation.

Why cycles rather than a flat number of hours
Sleep is not uniform. It moves through stages, from light sleep into deep sleep and then into REM, and back again, in a repeating pattern. The popular figure for the length of one full pass through that pattern is around 90 minutes, which is where this calculator gets its number.
The reasoning behind timing a wake-up to the end of a cycle is that waking from light sleep tends to feel easier than waking out of deep sleep, which is where the groggy, disoriented feeling comes from. Aiming for a boundary rather than an arbitrary hour is the idea behind every sleep cycle calculator.
It is worth being honest about how approximate this is. Cycle length varies between people and across the night, typically somewhere between 70 and 120 minutes, and the early cycles hold more deep sleep while later ones hold more REM. Fifteen minutes to fall asleep is likewise an average that will not describe your night specifically. Treat the suggestions as sensible targets to aim at, not as precise moments.
What this is not
This is a scheduling aid, not a health assessment. It knows nothing about you: not your age, your chronotype, your caffeine intake, your medication, your shift pattern, or whether you slept badly last night. It cannot tell you how much sleep you personally need, and it does not measure anything.
It also cannot diagnose or treat anything. Persistent trouble falling asleep, waking repeatedly through the night, snoring with pauses in breathing, or feeling exhausted despite a full night in bed are all worth raising with a doctor. Those are conditions with real treatments, and no calculator substitutes for that conversation.
What it does do well is remove the mental arithmetic from a bedtime decision at eleven at night, and make the cost of staying up another hour concrete. Seeing that a 23:15 bedtime buys a whole extra cycle over midnight is a more useful nudge than a vague sense that you should sleep more.
