"Storage full" warnings never tell you the truth on their own — they only tell you the pressure, not the cause. On every major platform there is a single built-in screen that breaks usage down by category. That is where to start.

Short answer: go to the native storage screen on your device — Settings > General > iPhone Storage on iOS, Settings > Device care > Storage on Android, About This Mac > Storage on macOS, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows. Each shows what is actually consuming space, sorted largest-first.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Settings > General > iPhone Storage
  2. wait for the bar graph at the top to render
  3. scroll down for per-app usage, sorted largest-first
  4. tap any app to see App Size vs Documents & Data — the data column is the reclaimable one
  5. use Recommendations at the top for one-tap actions (Offload Unused Apps, Review Large Attachments)

Android

Exact path varies by manufacturer; core locations:

  • Samsung: Settings > Device care > Storage
  • Pixel / stock Android: Settings > Storage
  • Xiaomi / Redmi: Settings > About phone > Storage

Every screen shows categories (Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents) and a per-app size list. Misc / System categories are explained in What is Misc Storage on Android?.

macOS

  1. Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage
  2. look at the bar graph — colored segments show Applications, Documents, macOS, System Data, etc.
  3. click the next to any category for drill-down
  4. Large Files tab lists the biggest single files anywhere on disk

If System Data is the biggest category, read What is System Data on Mac?. If you need folder-level detail, see How to Find Which Folders Are Taking the Most Space (Mac).

Windows 11

  1. Settings > System > Storage
  2. wait for the category scan
  3. click any category (Apps & features, Temporary files, System & reserved) for per-item breakdown
  4. for the largest files anywhere, use the File Explorer size:>1GB search from How to Find the Largest Files on Windows 11 Without Third-Party Apps
