How to use AI Color Palette Generator

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

How to generate a color palette from a mood or seed color

Type a mood keyword such as sunset, ocean, or neon and press New palette. The keyword maps to a recipe of hue, saturation, and lightness ranges, and five colors are drawn inside that envelope, getting lighter from left to right.

Then lock and re-roll. Keep the swatches that work, press Regenerate, and only the unlocked slots change. Five or six presses is usually enough to land on a palette. Switch to Seed color mode to build around a brand hex instead.

  • Choose Mood or keyword, or Seed color if you have a brand hex.
  • Type the mood (sunset, forest, ocean, pastel, neon, earth, berry, candy, monochrome, vintage) or paste the hex.
  • Press New palette to roll five colors.
  • Press Lock on the swatches you want to keep, then Regenerate to re-roll the rest.
  • Tap a swatch to copy its hex, or Copy all for the whole row, then check your text-on-background pairs against WCAG contrast ratios.
Tips

Getting a better result out of AI Color Palette Generator

Specific settings and thresholds, not general advice.

  • There is no model here. A mood keyword maps to a recipe of hue, saturation, and lightness ranges, and a seeded random number generator fills five slots inside that envelope. That is why it is instant, works offline, and never sends anything anywhere.
  • The recipe is what creates the cohesion. Each of the five slots takes a hue fanned across the mood's spread with up to 7 degrees of jitter, a saturation drawn from the mood's range, and a lightness that climbs steadily from the low end to the high end. That rising lightness ramp is why the palettes read as a usable scale rather than five unrelated colors.
  • Seed color mode is the one to use for brand work: it takes your hex, keeps its hue, and builds an envelope of plus or minus 55 degrees of hue spread around it with a lightness range starting about 28 points below your color. Lock your brand hex and regenerate the other four around it.
  • Locking is the whole workflow. Roll, lock the one or two swatches that work, roll again, repeat. Regenerate keeps locks; New palette clears them. Converging on a palette this way takes about five presses.
  • Contrast is not checked. The generator produces a coherent scale, not an accessible one. Before you ship a palette, run any text-on-background pair through a contrast checker: 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text.
Limits

What AI Color Palette Generator does not do

The honest boundary, so you do not lose time finding it yourself.

  • No AI model. It is deterministic color math with a seeded RNG, which is what the honest version of this label means.
  • Exactly five swatches, always. No 3-color or 8-color palette.
  • No contrast or accessibility checking, and no colorblind simulation.
  • No export beyond copying hex values: no CSS variables, no Tailwind config, no ASE or Sketch palette file.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

If it is not AI, how does it produce coherent palettes?

By constraining where the colors can come from. Each mood defines a base hue, how far the five hues may fan out, and the saturation and lightness ranges they must fall within. The randomiser then picks inside that envelope. The 'sunset' recipe, for instance, fans 70 degrees around hue 18 at 70 to 95% saturation and 45 to 78% lightness. Cohesion is a property of the recipe, not of a model.

How do I build a palette around my brand color?

Switch to Seed color, enter your brand hex, and generate. The tool keeps that hue and builds a hue and lightness envelope around it. Then lock the swatch closest to your brand color and press Regenerate to re-roll the other four inside the same envelope until the supporting colors work.

Is the palette accessible?

It is not checked, and you should not assume it is. The generator optimises for coherence, not for contrast. The only accessibility affordance in the tool is the hex label on each swatch, which is switched between dark and light text based on the swatch's perceived brightness. Before shipping, check every text-on-background pair against WCAG: 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text and UI components.

What is the difference between Regenerate and New palette?

Regenerate re-rolls only the unlocked swatches, keeping the ones you have locked exactly where they are. New palette clears every lock and rolls all five fresh. The lock-and-regenerate loop is how you converge on a palette in a handful of presses instead of hunting for one.

How do I know which mood keyword will match my word?

Ten moods are defined (sunset, forest, ocean, pastel, neon, earth, berry, candy, monochrome, vintage) and each carries a list of synonyms, so 'autumn' finds sunset, 'cyber' finds neon, and 'terracotta' finds earth. Anything the matcher does not recognise falls back to ocean, so if you keep getting blues, your keyword is not matching.

Why do the five colors always get lighter from left to right?

By design. The lightness for each slot climbs steadily from the recipe's low end to its high end, with a small jitter. That gives you a usable scale, dark enough for text at one end and light enough for a background at the other, rather than five colors at the same value, which look busy and cannot be used together.
