How to deep-fry an image

Deep-frying is the deliberate destruction of an image: crank the saturation and contrast until colors clip, sharpen until halos appear, add grain, and then run it through low quality JPEG compression several times so the block artifacts become part of the picture. The look reads as ironic, over-shared, degraded, which is exactly why it works for memes.

This tool does all of that in one pass on an HTML canvas. Load a picture, drag one slider, and download the JPG. The intensity slider drives every stage together, so 40% gives a mildly cursed photo and 100% gives an unrecognizable orange smear.

  • The fry level slider runs from 10% to 100% and drives every stage at once: saturation is multiplied by up to 3.6x, contrast by up to 2.3x, and the image is re-encoded as JPEG between 1 and 4 times at a quality as low as 0.10, which is where the blocky 8x8 crunch comes from.
  • A transparent PNG will come out with a black background. The export is JPEG, and JPEG has no alpha channel, so every transparent pixel is composited to black. Flatten the image onto white first if you want a white background.
  • The tool downscales anything larger than 1000px on its longest side before processing, so a 4000px photo comes back at 1000px. Deep-frying is a look, not a resize step, so do it last if you also need a specific output size.
  • Re-randomize only changes the noise seed, not the intensity. If two exports look identical, it is because you changed the seed but the noise contribution at low fry levels (intensity x 0.5) is too small to see. Push the slider past 60% before you judge the randomizer.
  • Photos with flat areas (sky, a plain wall, a screenshot with white space) fry best, because JPEG artifacts and the sharpen pass have room to bloom. A picture that is already noisy or heavily textured mostly turns to mud.

Why does my PNG logo come out with a black background?

The deep-fried result is exported as JPEG, and the JPEG format has no alpha channel. Any pixel that was transparent in the source is composited to black by the canvas when it encodes. Put the logo on a solid background before you fry it, or accept the black.

What exactly is being done to the pixels?

Five stages, in order: a slight zoom so the edges crunch, a saturation boost, a contrast boost, an unsharp-mask sharpen pass, and random noise. Then the canvas re-encodes the result as a very low quality JPEG one to four times, reloading it each time, which stacks real compression artifacts on top of the effect.

Can I get a bigger output than 1000px?

No. The tool resizes any image whose longest side exceeds 1000px before it runs the effect, because the sharpen and noise passes work per pixel and a 4000px image would lock up the tab. If you need a larger canvas, upscale the fried JPG afterwards, which will not lose you much given how destroyed it already is.

Why does the same fry level look different each time I press re-randomize?

The noise layer is seeded, and re-randomize advances the seed. Saturation, contrast, sharpen, and the JPEG passes are deterministic from the slider, so only the grain pattern changes. At low intensity the noise is scaled to intensity x 0.5, so the difference is subtle.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is loaded into an HTML canvas in your own tab and every pass, including the JPEG round trips, is done by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can fry a private screenshot without it leaving your device.
