What extracting MP3 audio from an MKV involves

MKV is the container of video rips and long recordings: movies, concert films, downloaded series episodes, multi-hour captures. Converting to MP3 ignores the picture entirely; only the audio stream is decoded and re-encoded as MP3, on your own device. That is why a file measured in gigabytes produces an MP3 measured in tens of megabytes, in far less time than the video runs.

If the audio is headed into an editor rather than a player, MP3 is the wrong stop; extract to WAV instead so the editor is not working on re-compressed material.
