How to use Molecular Weight Calculator

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

About this molecular weight calculator

Type a chemical formula and read the molar mass in grams per mole. Each element’s count is multiplied by its standard atomic weight and summed: water is 2 × 1.008 + 15.999 = 18.015 g/mol. Groups like Ca(OH)2 and K4[Fe(CN)6] and hydrates written with a dot are expanded automatically, and the table shows each element’s share of the mass. Element symbols are case-sensitive: Co is cobalt, CO is carbon monoxide.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

Is molar mass the same as molecular weight?

Numerically, yes. Molar mass is in grams per mole; molecular weight (relative molecular mass) is the same number without units, or in daltons for a single molecule. Glucose, C6H12O6, is 180.156 g/mol.

Which atomic weights are used?

IUPAC conventional values for common elements, such as 1.008 for hydrogen, 12.011 for carbon and 15.999 for oxygen, and standard values for the rest. Results can differ from a textbook in the last decimal if it rounds differently.
