What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

How to convert weight units

Enter a number, pick the unit you have and the unit you want, and the answer appears immediately along with every other mass unit in the table. Nothing leaves your browser, so it also works with the network off.

All seven units map to a single base, the kilogram, using exact factors. That keeps kg to lb, g to oz and kg to stone mutually consistent instead of each pair having its own rounding.

  • Type the mass in the Value box, for example 70.
  • Select the unit it is in from the From list, for example Kilogram (kg).
  • Select the unit you want from the To list, for example Pound (lb).
  • Read the result, or use the table to see grams, ounces and stone at the same time.
  • Use Swap units to reverse the direction, and Copy result to take the number away.

Which ounce, which ton, which pound

Three of these unit names are ambiguous outside this page, and each ambiguity has a cost. The ounce here is the avoirdupois ounce, 28.349523125 g, used for food, post, and shipping. The troy ounce that prices gold and silver is 31.1034768 g, about 9.7 percent heavier, so treating a bullion weight as an avoirdupois ounce understates it by roughly a tenth.

The ton is worse, because three of them are in circulation. This converter has only the metric ton of 1,000 kg, which is 2204.62262185 lb. The US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18474 kg) and the UK long ton is 2,240 lb (1016.0469088 kg). A shipping document that just says "tons" is ambiguous by up to ten percent, and the only fix is to ask.

The pound at least is unambiguous in commerce: the international avoirdupois pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kg since the 1959 agreement between the English-speaking standards bodies. The troy pound still exists for precious metals at 373.2417216 g and is not in this list.

  • Avoirdupois ounce 28.349523125 g (here) vs troy ounce 31.1034768 g (not here).
  • Metric ton 1,000 kg (here) vs short ton 907.18474 kg vs long ton 1016.0469088 kg.
  • Stone is exactly 14 lb, or 6.35029318 kg, and is used almost only in the UK and Ireland.

Body weight, stone, and compound readings

Body weight is the most searched use of this converter, and the three regions involved each use a different unit: kilograms across most of the world, pounds in the United States, and stone-and-pounds in the UK and Ireland. Because a stone is 14 lb, a UK reading is compound rather than decimal: 11 st 4 lb, not 11.29 st.

This converter takes a single number, so a compound reading has to be flattened first. Multiply the stone by 14, add the pounds, and enter the total: 11 st 4 lb becomes 158 lb, which reads as 71.66759446 kg. Going the other way, the decimal part of a stone result is a fraction of fourteen pounds, so 11.0231131092 st is 11 st and about 0.32 lb.

Tips

Getting a better result out of Weight Converter

Specific settings and thresholds, not general advice.

  • The pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 1 kg = 2.20462262185 lb. That factor has been exact since 1959, not an approximation.
  • A stone is exactly 14 lb, or 6.35029318 kg, so 70 kg is 11.0231 st, which reads as 11 st and about 0.3 lb.
  • The ounce here is the avoirdupois ounce, 28.349523125 g, which is exactly 1/16 lb. It is not the troy ounce (31.1034768 g) used for gold and silver, a 9.7% difference.
  • The metric ton is 1000 kg = 2204.62262185 lb. It is not the US short ton (2000 lb, 907.18474 kg), which is not in this list.
  • The whole table spans nine orders of magnitude, from mg to metric ton. Any result smaller than 0.000001 of the base kilogram switches to exponential notation.
Limits

What Weight Converter does not do

The honest boundary, so you do not lose time finding it yourself.

  • No troy ounce, pennyweight, grain, or carat, so precious-metal and gemstone weights will be wrong here.
  • No US short ton or UK long ton, only the 1000 kg metric ton.
  • No compound input like 11 st 4 lb, convert to a single number (158 lb) first.
  • It converts mass, not force. Newtons, kgf and pounds-force are not on this page.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

Does my data get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The page runs in any modern mobile browser, on iPhone and Android alike, with no app to install.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The tool runs entirely in the browser, so there is nothing to download or install.

How many pounds is 70 kg?

70 kg is 154.323583529 lb, which is 11.0231 stone. The converter derives all three from the exact definition of the pound as 0.45359237 kg, so the figure does not drift as you add digits.

Is the ounce here the same one used to price gold?

No. Gold, silver and platinum are priced per troy ounce, which is 31.1034768 g. The ounce in this converter is the avoirdupois ounce used for food and shipping, 28.349523125 g. Using the wrong one overstates a metal weight by about 9.7%.

How do I enter a weight given as 11 st 4 lb?

Convert to a single unit first. A stone is 14 lb, so 11 st 4 lb is 158 lb. Enter 158, select Pound, and read 71.66759446 kg.

Why is a metric ton not 2000 pounds?

The metric ton is defined as 1000 kg, which works out to 2204.62 lb. The 2000 lb ton is the US short ton (907.18474 kg) and the 2240 lb ton is the UK long ton. Only the metric ton is in this list, so check which one a shipping document means.

Does the converter distinguish mass from weight?

Everything in the list is a mass unit, including the pound as used in commerce. Weight is a force and would be measured in newtons or kilograms-force, which are not here. In everyday use on Earth the numbers line up, which is why the distinction rarely bites.

How many kg is 1 lb?

0.45359237 kg exactly. That is a definition agreed in 1959 rather than a measured value, which means it will never be revised and every digit after it is a true zero. The reverse, 1 kg in pounds, is 2.20462262185 lb and does not terminate.

Is this free and does it work offline?

Yes to both. There is no account, no signup, and no usage limit, and the conversion is arithmetic performed by the page itself. Once the page has loaded it keeps converting with the network disconnected, because there is no server call to make.

How many ounces are in a kilogram?

35.2739619496 avoirdupois ounces, and 2.20462262185 lb, since a pound is 16 ounces. For rough kitchen work, 100 g is a shade over 3.5 oz, which is the approximation most conversion charts print.

Why does a very small value switch to scientific notation?

Because below one millionth the plain decimal form becomes unreadable. Anything smaller than 1e-6, or larger than 1e15, is printed in exponential notation instead. A single milligram expressed in metric tons is one such case, and the exponent is easier to read than a string of leading zeros.
