How to convert a number to Roman numerals
Type a whole number between 1 and 3,999 and the numerals appear immediately. The converter works greedily down a table of value and symbol pairs that includes the subtractive combinations, subtracting each value as often as it fits.
That table is the whole of the standard notation. It is why the output never repeats a symbol four times, and why it always produces the canonical form rather than one of the decorative variants.
- Type a whole number from 1 to 3,999.
- Read the numerals in the result box, which update as you type.
- Expect subtractive forms: 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD, and 900 is CM.
- Use Copy result to take the numerals to the clipboard.
- For a value above 3,999, note that no standard plain-text notation exists.
