How to use Screen Test

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

About this screen test

Go full screen and step through nine solid colours and five patterns. Gradients should be smooth; stripes mean banding. On the black-level screen you should tell the 3% square from black; if not, brightness or gamma is off. The sharpness grid alternates one-pixel lines, which blur or shimmer when the screen is not at its native resolution. The dark uniformity field shows backlight bleed and clouding, best viewed in a dark room.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

How do I check for backlight bleed?

Dim the room, set brightness to your usual level and open the uniformity pattern full screen. Light leaking at the edges or corners is bleed; some is normal on IPS panels.

Why do I see banding in the gradients?

An 8-bit panel shows 256 steps per colour, which can be faintly visible. Strong bands point to 6-bit panels, heavy colour processing or a compressed video signal.
