iOS Update Space
Also known as: iOS update storage, software update space, stuck iOS update
iOS Update Space is the room an iOS software update needs — both the downloaded installer and the temporary working space to apply it. A downloaded update that has not been installed sits in storage and can show up inside System Data.
- Installing needs more space than the download
- A downloaded update can appear in System Data
- A stuck update can be removed with Delete Update
Why an update needs extra room
Installing iOS takes more space than the download alone, because the device unpacks and stages files before applying them. If free space is tight, the update stalls, and the already-downloaded installer keeps occupying storage in the meantime.
A downloaded-but-not-installed update is counted as reclaimable data and often appears under System Data in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Removing a stuck update
If an update is downloaded but you cannot or do not want to install it, find it in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap it in the list, and choose Delete Update. You can re-download it later when you have enough free space. iOS also offers to temporarily remove apps to make room when an install needs it.
