How to use Binary Calculator

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

About this binary calculator

Binary arithmetic works like decimal with only 0 and 1: 1 + 1 = 10, carry the 1. So 1011 (11) + 110 (6) = 10001 (17). The calculator uses exact big-integer arithmetic, so 64-bit and longer values never lose digits, and shows the answer in every base. Bitwise AND, OR and XOR compare the numbers bit by bit, and << and >> shift them: 1011 << 2 = 101100, which is × 4. A negative result is also shown as 8, 16 and 32-bit two’s complement.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

How do you subtract in binary?

Borrow as in decimal: 10 − 1 = 1. Computers add the two’s complement instead: invert the bits of the number being subtracted and add 1.

What does ÷ return?

Whole-number division, as in programming: 1011 ÷ 10 = 101 (11 ÷ 2 = 5). mod gives the remainder, 1.
