About this check mark symbol

A check mark in a document is usually one of four characters. The plain check ✓ (U+2713) is the typographic one, thin and quiet, and it is what belongs in body text and tables. The heavy check ✔ (U+2714) is the same shape with more weight, useful when the mark has to survive at small sizes. The ballot box with check ☑ (U+2611) draws its own box, so it stands alone in a list without needing a bullet. The green ✅ is an emoji and gets platform artwork, which makes it loud in a spreadsheet but perfect in a chat. Pair each with the matching cross and a comparison table reads cleanly: ✓ against ✗, ✔ against ✘, ☑ against ☒. A note for spreadsheets: none of these are true checkboxes, they are characters in a cell, so they will not toggle when clicked.

How do I insert a check mark in Excel or Google Sheets?

Copy one from this page and paste it into the cell, or use the Wingdings font trick with the letter a in Excel. The pasted Unicode character is safer because it survives a font change and works in Sheets too.

What is the difference between ✓ and ✔?

Only weight. U+2713 is the light check mark and U+2714 is the heavy one. Both are plain text characters that inherit the color of your text.

Is the green check mark the same character?

No. ✅ is an emoji, so it is drawn by your platform in fixed colors and ignores your text color. The plain checks stay in whatever color your text is.

Can a screen reader read these?

Yes, though it announces the character name rather than a status, for example "check mark". In a table, keep a text label in the row so the meaning does not rest on the symbol alone.
