How to convert keyboard layout text

To fix text typed in the wrong layout, paste it into the tool and choose the conversion direction, such as EN to RU or RU to EN. The converter maps each character to the key in the target layout, turning gibberish like a mistyped word back into the text you meant to type.

Conversion runs locally in your browser, so your text is never uploaded. This is ideal for the common case of starting to type before switching your keyboard language, leaving you with a line of nonsense that this tool can recover in one paste.

  • Paste the mistyped or garbled text
  • Choose the layout direction (EN, RU, or UA)
  • The tool remaps each keystroke
  • Copy the corrected text

Why this is remapping, not translation

This tool performs keystroke remapping, not language translation. It assumes the words were typed on the wrong layout and reconstructs them by mapping each physical key to its character in the chosen layout, it does not change the meaning or convert one language into another.

That distinction is what makes it useful for mistyped text and bilingual cleanup. If you actually want to translate the meaning of text between languages, a layout converter is the wrong tool; if your text is just scrambled because of a layout mismatch, this fixes it instantly.

Tips

Getting a better result out of Keyboard Layout Converter

Specific settings and thresholds, not general advice.

  • Four presets are available: EN to RU, RU to EN, EN to UA and UA to EN. The tool remaps the 33 keys of the three main typing rows, so what you get back is what the other layout would have produced on the same physical keys.
  • This is not translation. Typing privet on a Russian layout produces привет because the keys line up, but the tool has no idea what the words mean and will happily produce nonsense from correct text.
  • Punctuation moves with the layout. On the EN to RU map, the semicolon key becomes ж, the apostrophe becomes э, the comma becomes б, the full stop becomes ю, and the slash becomes a full stop.
  • Digits, spaces and any character outside the 33 mapped keys pass through untouched, so numbers and email addresses in the middle of a converted sentence survive intact.
  • Case is preserved because both the lowercase and the uppercase form of each key is mapped, so ПРИВЕТ converts as cleanly as привет.
Limits

What Keyboard Layout Converter does not do

The honest boundary, so you do not lose time finding it yourself.

  • Four presets only: EN to RU, RU to EN, EN to UA and UA to EN. No German, French or Turkish layouts.
  • It maps the standard QWERTY and ЙЦУКЕН key rows. Non-standard or phonetic layouts will produce wrong output.
  • It does not translate, spell-check or correct grammar.
  • The number row is not remapped, so shifted symbols from the number row stay as typed.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

Is the keyboard layout converter free?

Yes. This keyboard layout converter is completely free to use with no signup or account required.

Does it upload my text?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device, so your text is never uploaded to a server and stays private.

Does it translate the text?

No. It only remaps the characters by keyboard layout. It does not translate languages or correct spelling.

Which layouts are supported?

This version supports EN, RU, and UA layouts, with conversion in both directions between them.

When should I use this tool?

Use it when text comes out as gibberish because you typed before switching your keyboard language. It remaps the keystrokes back to what you intended.

Does this translate the text?

No. It remaps characters by keyboard position. The letter that sits on the same physical key in the target layout replaces the one you typed. That is why it fixes text typed with the wrong layout selected, and why it turns perfectly good English into gibberish if you run it on text that was already correct.

Which keys are actually mapped?

The three main typing rows, 33 keys in total, from the backtick through the letter rows to the slash. That includes the bracket, semicolon, apostrophe, comma, period and slash keys, which carry Cyrillic letters on the RU and UA layouts. The number row and the modifier keys are left alone.

Is the conversion reversible?

For the mapped keys, yes. Running EN to RU and then RU to EN returns the original characters, because the two maps are inverses over the same 33 keys. Characters outside the map pass through both directions unchanged, so they come back as they went in.

Why does the Ukrainian preset behave differently from the Russian one?

The Ukrainian layout does not have ё, ъ, ы or э, and it has і, ї, є in their place. The key positions therefore carry different letters, and the backtick key produces an apostrophe rather than ё. If you convert text that was typed on a Russian layout using the Ukrainian preset, those four letters will not come back correctly.

I do not know which direction I need. What do I do?

Use the Fix Wrong Keyboard Layout page instead. It runs all four presets, scores each result by how much of it looks like real words, and shows the best candidate first with the other three underneath. This page is for when you already know the pair you want.

Does the text get uploaded?

No. The conversion is a character-by-character lookup in a map held in the page, so nothing is sent anywhere. It also means the conversion is instant regardless of how much text you paste.
