About this keyboard tester

Press keys and watch the on-screen layout respond: blue while held, green once registered. A key that never turns green is not reaching the computer, and a key that stays blue with no finger on it is a stuck switch. The tester reads the physical key position, so it works identically on QWERTY, AZERTY, and any language layout, and it shows both the key code and the character your layout typed. A few keys never reach the browser, laptop function rows and OS shortcuts get captured by the system first; that is the operating system, not a broken key.

How do I test for a dead key?

Press it. If it lights up, the switch and controller work, and any typing problem is software. If nothing lights up in this tab, the key press never reached the computer.

Why does a key show a different letter than my layout?

The layout diagram is positional (the physical ANSI grid), while the typed character follows your language layout. Both are shown, the position on the diagram and the character in the readout.

Some function keys do nothing here. Broken?

Probably not: laptop Fn combinations and some OS shortcuts are consumed by the system before any web page sees them. Test those in a text editor with the Fn behavior toggled.

Can it test key rollover?

Yes, hold several letters at once: every key the keyboard reports lights simultaneously, which shows your effective rollover in this browser.

Is anything recorded?

No. Key events are drawn on screen and discarded; nothing leaves the page.
