Sort the numbers. With an odd count the median is the middle one: 3, 7, 8, 9, 12, 12, 15 has 7 values, so the 4th, 9, is the median. With an even count, average the two middle values: the median of 3, 7, 8, 9 is (7 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7.5. Half the data sits at or below the median, half at or above.
