About this range calculator

Range = maximum − minimum. For 12, 7, 9, 12, 15, 3, 8 it is 15 − 3 = 12. It is the simplest measure of spread but depends only on the two most extreme values, so the interquartile range (here 5), which covers the middle half of the data, is often more telling.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

Can the range be negative?

No. The maximum is never below the minimum, so the range is zero or positive.

What is the difference between range and IQR?

Range spans all the data; IQR spans the middle 50% (Q3 − Q1), so one extreme value does not change it.
