How to use Periodic Table

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

About this periodic table

Elements are ordered by atomic number, the count of protons. Each row (period) adds an electron shell and each column (group) shares the same outer electrons, which is why elements in a column behave alike: lithium, sodium and potassium all react with water. Click any element for its atomic mass, group, period, block and electron configuration, or tap a family such as the halogens or noble gases to light it up. The lanthanides and actinides sit in the two rows below the main table.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

How many elements are there?

118, from hydrogen (1) to oganesson (118). Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 were confirmed and named in 2016, completing the seventh row.

Why are some atomic masses in brackets?

Elements with no stable isotope have no standard atomic weight, so the table shows the mass number of the longest-lived isotope instead, for example technetium [98].

How do I read an electron configuration like [Ar] 3d6 4s2?

The bracket stands for the electron arrangement of that noble gas; the rest lists extra electrons by subshell. Iron has argon’s 18 electrons plus six in 3d and two in 4s: 26 in total.
