How to convert pressure units

Enter a pressure, choose the unit you have, and choose the unit you want. All six units, Pa, kPa, bar, psi, atm and mmHg, update at once from a single entry.

The pascal is the internal base and every factor is exact, so bar to psi does not pass through a rounded intermediate. Remember that the tool converts units, not reference points: gauge and absolute pressure are the same number in different frames, and the offset is yours to apply.

  • Type the pressure in the Value box, for example 32.
  • Pick the From unit, for example Pound per square inch (psi).
  • Pick the To unit, for example Bar.
  • Read the result and check the kPa row, which is what most datasheets use.
  • If you need absolute pressure from a gauge reading, add 1 atm (14.6959 psi or 101.325 kPa) after converting.

Gauge, absolute, and why the unit label is not enough

A pressure number carries two pieces of information: a magnitude and a reference point. Gauge pressure is measured relative to the surrounding atmosphere, which is what a tire gauge, a boiler gauge, and a blood pressure cuff all read. Absolute pressure is measured from a perfect vacuum. The same physical state is 32 psig or 46.7 psia, and the difference is one atmosphere.

This converter changes the magnitude and never touches the reference point. That is the correct behavior, because there is no way to guess from the number alone which frame it was measured in. If your source says psig, kPa gauge, or barg and your target needs absolute, add one atmosphere yourself: 14.6959487755 psi, 101.325 kPa, or 1.01325 bar.

  • psig, barg, kPa(g): relative to atmosphere, what most gauges show.
  • psia, bara, kPa(a): relative to vacuum, what thermodynamic tables use.
  • Absolute equals gauge plus 1 atm at sea level, less at altitude.

Which pressure unit each field actually uses

Tires are the most common reason people land on a pressure converter, and they are split down the middle: US placards are in psi, European ones in bar, and Japanese service data often in kPa. Meteorology settled on hectopascals, which are numerically identical to the older millibar, so a 1013 hPa reading and a 1013 mbar reading are the same number.

Medicine kept mmHg for blood pressure and intraocular pressure, industrial process work runs on bar and kPa, and vacuum work drops into pascals and torr. The unit is a strong hint about the source of a figure, which is worth noticing when a spec sheet mixes two of them in the same table.

Getting a better result out of Pressure Converter

Specific settings and thresholds, not general advice.

  • The bar is exactly 100,000 Pa, so 1 bar is 14.503773773 psi and 1 psi is 6.89475729317 kPa.
  • Tire pressure is the everyday case: 32 psi is 2.20632 bar, and a European 2.2 bar spec is 31.908 psi. A 5% error here is a real handling difference.
  • 1 atm is 101,325 Pa by definition, which is 14.6959487755 psi. This tool converts units only, so to turn a gauge reading (psig) into an absolute pressure you add 14.6959 psi yourself.
  • 1 atm reads as 759.999891726 mmHg, not exactly 760. The mmHg here is defined as 133.322387415 Pa, while a torr is exactly 101325/760 Pa, and the two differ by about one part in seven million.
  • Blood pressure is in mmHg: a 120/80 reading is 15.9986865 kPa over 10.665791 kPa.
Limits

What is 32 psi in bar?

2.20632 bar. Most European tire placards are given in bar, most US ones in psi, and the two common specs (32 psi and 2.2 bar) are within 0.3% of each other, which is why the mix-up usually goes unnoticed.

Why is 1 atm 759.9999 mmHg instead of exactly 760?

Because mmHg and torr are defined slightly differently. A torr is exactly 1/760 of a standard atmosphere. A millimeter of mercury is defined from the density of mercury as 133.322387415 Pa. The difference is about one part in seven million, invisible in practice but visible at 12 significant figures.

Is the psi here gauge pressure or absolute pressure?

Neither. This is a pure unit conversion, so it converts whatever number you give it. A tire gauge reads gauge pressure, which is pressure above atmospheric, so absolute pressure is your gauge reading plus 14.6959 psi (1 atm).

What is a 120/80 blood pressure in kPa?

About 16.0 kPa over 10.7 kPa. The exact values are 15.9986865 kPa and 10.665791 kPa, since 1 mmHg is 133.322387415 Pa. Clinical practice sticks to mmHg, but research papers sometimes use kPa.

How many kilopascals are in a bar?

Exactly 100 kPa, since a bar is 100,000 Pa. That makes the bar convenient as a rough stand-in for one atmosphere (101.325 kPa), though the two differ by 1.3%.

Is a millibar the same as a hectopascal?

Yes, exactly. A millibar is 100 Pa and so is a hectopascal, which is why weather services could switch from mbar to hPa in the 1980s without changing a single printed number. Neither symbol is in this unit list, but you can read the same value off the kPa row and shift the decimal point: 1013 hPa is 101.3 kPa.

What is 100 kPa in psi?

14.503773773 psi, because a psi is 6,894.757293168361 Pa exactly. That factor comes from the exact pound-force and the exact square inch, so it is a definition rather than a measurement, and it does not change as instruments improve.

Can it convert pressure into force?

No. Pressure is force per unit area, so getting from one to the other needs the area, which this page has no field for. Convert the pressure into pascals here, multiply by the area in square meters, and the result is newtons.
