How to convert torque units

Type a torque figure, choose the unit it is in, and choose the unit your wrench or datasheet uses. Newton meters, pound-feet, pound-inches and kilogram-force meters all update from a single entry.

The newton meter is the internal base and each factor is exact, so a pound-foot spec converted to N-m gives the full 12 significant figures, and you round to whatever the wrench scale allows.

  • Check whether the spec is in lb-ft or lb-in, they differ by a factor of 12.
  • Type the value in the Value box, for example 100.
  • Pick the From unit, for example Pound-foot (lb-ft).
  • Pick the To unit, for example Newton meter (N-m).
  • Read the result and set the wrench, rounding to the nearest mark rather than the last digit.

lb-ft, ft-lb, lb-in: the naming is a genuine hazard

Pound-foot and foot-pound are written both ways in the wild and almost always mean the same thing, a torque of one pound-force applied at a one-foot lever arm. Strictly, physicists reserve the foot-pound for work and energy and the pound-foot for torque, but service manuals and wrench markings use them interchangeably, so treat lb-ft and ft-lb as identical when reading a spec.

The dangerous pair is lb-ft against lb-in, which differ by exactly twelve. A 25 lb-in electronics fastener is 2.825 N-m; a 25 lb-ft reading is 33.9 N-m, twelve times more, and enough to strip a small screw or crack a plastic boss. Inch-pound wrenches exist as a separate tool precisely because that factor is easy to miss.

  • 1 lb-ft = 12 lb-in exactly.
  • ft-lb and lb-ft in a service manual mean the same torque.
  • kgf-m appears in older Japanese and European manuals: 1 kgf-m = 9.80665 N-m.

Setting a torque wrench from a converted figure

A converted torque is only as useful as the tool that applies it. A click-type wrench is typically accurate to within about four percent of the setting and only across the middle of its range, so a value read to twelve digits should be rounded to the nearest usable mark. A spec of 135.581794833 N-m becomes 135 N-m on the wrench, and nothing is lost by that.

Two things the converter cannot do for you matter more than the last decimal place: the tightening sequence and the condition of the thread. A dry, lubricated, or thread-locked fastener reaches a different clamping force at the same torque, and a manual that specifies a torque-plus-angle procedure cannot be satisfied by a torque figure alone.

Getting a better result out of Torque Converter

  • 1 lb-ft is exactly 12 lb-in, and 1 N-m is 0.73756215 lb-ft. Going the other way, 100 lb-ft is 135.581794833 N-m.
  • Wheel nuts are the classic case: a 100 lb-ft spec is 135.58 N-m, and getting the unit wrong by a factor of 1.356 is how studs get stripped.
  • kgf-m uses standard gravity, so 1 kgf-m is exactly 9.80665 N-m. Older Japanese and European service manuals use it.
  • Torque and energy have the same dimensions (force times distance) but they are not the same quantity. Never convert 50 N-m of torque into 50 J of work, even though the arithmetic would go through.
  • Small fasteners are specified in lb-in or in N-m: a 3 lb-in laptop screw is only 0.339 N-m, which is why an inch-pound wrench exists as a separate tool.
Limits

Why can I not convert newton meters to joules here?

Because they measure different things despite sharing the same dimensions. A joule is work done when a force moves through a distance in the direction of the force. A newton meter of torque is a force applied at a perpendicular distance, with no motion implied. Physics keeps them apart, and so does this converter.

How do I get horsepower from torque?

You need rotational speed as well. In imperial units, horsepower equals torque in lb-ft times rpm divided by 5,252. This tool converts the torque units, and the Power Converter handles the horsepower side once you have done that multiplication.

What is a kgf-m?

A kilogram-force meter, the torque produced by one kilogram-force acting at a distance of one meter. Because standard gravity is defined as exactly 9.80665 m/s squared, 1 kgf-m is exactly 9.80665 N-m.

How many pound-inches are in a pound-foot?

Exactly 12, since a foot is 12 inches. That means a 25 lb-in electronics spec is 2.08 lb-ft, or 2.825 N-m, which is a very different setting from 25 lb-ft.

Is ft-lb the same as lb-ft?

In practice, yes. Both describe a pound-force acting at a one-foot lever arm, and torque specs are printed both ways depending on the publisher. The formal distinction reserves foot-pound for energy and pound-foot for torque, but no service manual relies on it, so read them as the same unit and check whether the spec is in feet or inches instead.

What is 80 lb-ft in Nm?

Does the converter know anything about my fastener?

No. It converts a number between four torque units and has no bolt database, no grade tables, and no lubrication or friction model. Two identical bolts torqued to the same figure can end up with different clamping force depending on thread condition, so use the manufacturer spec rather than a general table.
