How to use Energy Converter

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

How to convert energy units

Enter an energy value, pick the unit you have, and pick the unit you want. Joules, kilojoules, calories, kilocalories, watt hours, kilowatt hours and BTU all update at once from one entry.

The joule is the internal base and every factor is an exact standard value, so a chain like kcal to kJ to kWh stays consistent. Keep energy and power separate: watts are joules per second, and this page has no time input.

  • Type the energy in the Value box, for example 250.
  • Pick the From unit, for example Kilocalorie (kcal).
  • Pick the To unit, for example Kilojoule (kJ).
  • Read the result and the whole table if you need BTU or kWh at the same time.
  • For anything rate-based, multiply power by time first, then convert the energy here.
Tips

Getting a better result out of Energy Converter

Specific settings and thresholds, not general advice.

  • The Calorie on a food label is really a kilocalorie. A 250 Calorie bar is 250 kcal, which is 1046 kJ, or 1,046,000 J.
  • 1 kWh is 3,600,000 J, or 3.6 MJ, or 860.420650096 kcal. That is the unit your electricity meter counts in.
  • cal here is the thermochemical calorie, exactly 4.184 J. The 15 degree calorie (4.1855 J) and the IT calorie (4.1868 J) differ by up to 0.07%, which matters only in lab work.
  • BTU here is the IT British thermal unit, 1055.05585262 J. A 12,000 BTU per hour air conditioner (one ton of cooling) moves 3.517 kW of heat.
  • A 5,000 mAh phone battery at 3.7 V stores 18.5 Wh, which is 66,600 J. Airlines cap spare batteries at 100 Wh, which is 360,000 J.
Limits

What Energy Converter does not do

The honest boundary, so you do not lose time finding it yourself.

  • No electronvolts, ergs, therms, or tonnes of oil equivalent.
  • No rate units. BTU per hour and joules per second are power, not energy, so use the Power Converter.
  • It will not price a kWh or compute a cost, and it has no tariff data.
  • One value at a time, and no accumulation over a duration.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

Does my data get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Is this free to use?

Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no signup, and no usage limits.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The page runs in any modern mobile browser, on iPhone and Android alike, with no app to install.

Is a food Calorie the same as a calorie?

No. The Calorie with a capital C on a nutrition label is a kilocalorie, which is 1,000 small calories, or 4,184 J. So a 2,000 Calorie diet is 2,000 kcal, which is 8,368 kJ, and entering 2,000 kcal here gives you exactly that.

How many joules are in a kilowatt hour?

3,600,000 J, because a kilowatt is 1,000 J per second and an hour is 3,600 seconds. In other units, 1 kWh is 3.6 MJ, 860.42 kcal, or 3412.14 BTU.

Which calorie definition does this converter use?

The thermochemical calorie, exactly 4.184 J, which is the definition used in nutrition and in most chemistry. Other definitions exist (the 15 degree calorie and the IT calorie) but they differ by less than 0.07%, well below the precision of any food label.

How much energy does a 60 W bulb use if it is left on all day?

60 W for 24 hours is 1.44 kWh, which is 5,184,000 J or 1,239 kcal. The converter handles the unit change but not the multiplication by time, so work out the watt-hours first and then convert.

How do I convert kcal to kJ for a nutrition label?

Multiply by 4.184. European labels print both, so 250 kcal appears as 1046 kJ. Enter the kcal figure, select Kilojoule, and the tool does the same arithmetic exactly.
