How to use Frequency Converter

What the tool does, how to run it, and what to expect from the result.

How to convert frequency units

Enter a frequency, pick the unit it is in, and pick the unit you want. Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz and rpm all update from one entry, so a motor speed and a clock rate can be compared in the same table.

The hertz is the internal base, and rpm carries the exact 1/60 factor, so rotational and electronic frequencies reconcile without an intermediate rounding step.

  • Type the frequency in the Value box, for example 3000.
  • Pick the From unit, for example Revolution per minute (rpm).
  • Pick the To unit, for example Hertz (Hz).
  • Read the result and use the table if you need kHz, MHz and GHz together.
  • For a period rather than a frequency, take the reciprocal first and convert it as a time.
Tips

Getting a better result out of Frequency Converter

Specific settings and thresholds, not general advice.

  • rpm is exactly 1/60 Hz. 3,000 rpm is 50 Hz, and 60 Hz is 3,600 rpm, which is why a two-pole motor on a 60 Hz grid runs near 3,600 rpm.
  • Musical tempo in BPM is numerically identical to rpm, so 120 BPM is 2 Hz. Select rpm and the conversion works.
  • 1 GHz is 1,000,000,000 Hz. A 3.2 GHz processor completes 3.2 billion clock cycles per second, which puts a single cycle at 0.3125 nanoseconds.
  • Audio sample rates: 44.1 kHz is 44,100 Hz, chosen because human hearing tops out near 20 kHz and sampling has to be at least twice the highest frequency.
  • Frequency and period are reciprocals, not unit conversions: 50 Hz is 20 ms per cycle. Take 1 divided by the frequency and convert the result with the Time Converter.
Limits

What Frequency Converter does not do

The honest boundary, so you do not lose time finding it yourself.

  • No period or wavelength conversion. Hz to seconds or Hz to meters is a reciprocal, not a scaling.
  • No angular frequency (rad/s), which is 2 pi times the value in Hz.
  • No terahertz, and no cents, semitones, or musical pitch.
  • One value at a time, no sweep or series.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers for the questions people usually have before trying a utility like this.

Does my data get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Is this free to use?

Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no signup, and no usage limits.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The page runs in any modern mobile browser, on iPhone and Android alike, with no app to install.

How many rpm is 50 Hz?

3,000 rpm, because 1 Hz is one revolution per second and there are 60 seconds in a minute. A 50 Hz grid runs a two-pole motor at about 3,000 rpm and a four-pole motor at about 1,500 rpm, before slip.

Can I convert Hz to a period in seconds here?

No, because that is a reciprocal rather than a unit conversion. Take 1 divided by the frequency: 50 Hz gives 0.02 s, which is 20 ms. Then use the Time Converter if you want it in other time units.

Is BPM the same as rpm?

Numerically, yes. Both are events per minute, so 120 BPM and 120 rpm both convert to 2 Hz. Select Revolution per minute and enter the tempo, and the hertz value is correct.

What is 44.1 kHz in hertz?

44,100 Hz. CD audio uses that rate because Nyquist requires sampling at more than twice the highest frequency you want to reproduce, and 20 kHz is the usual upper limit of human hearing.

How do I get angular frequency from hertz?

Multiply by 2 pi. 50 Hz is 314.159 rad/s. This converter does not carry rad/s, because it is an angular unit rather than a plain count of cycles, so do that multiplication yourself.
