How to convert power units

Enter a power figure, choose the unit it is in, and choose the unit you want. Watts, kilowatts, megawatts, mechanical horsepower and metric horsepower all update at once.

The watt is the internal base, and both horsepower definitions carry their exact values, so the 1.39% gap between hp and PS shows up in the result rather than being hidden by rounding.

  • Establish which horsepower your source used, hp or PS.
  • Type the value in the Value box, for example 300.
  • Pick the From unit, for example Metric horsepower (PS).
  • Pick the To unit, for example Horsepower (mechanical) or Kilowatt.

Getting a better result out of Power Converter

  • Power is energy per unit time: 1 W is 1 J/s. A 2,000 W kettle run for five minutes uses 600,000 J, which is 0.1667 kWh.
  • A megawatt is 1,000,000 W, so a 1.5 MW wind turbine is rated at 2,011.53 hp.

How do I get kilowatt hours from watts?

Multiply the power by the number of hours and divide by 1,000. A 2,000 W kettle for 5 minutes is 2,000 x 0.0833 h, which is 166.7 Wh, or 0.1667 kWh. This converter changes units of power, it does not integrate over time.

Can this convert kVA to kW?

No. Apparent power (kVA) becomes real power (kW) only when you know the power factor: kW equals kVA times the power factor. Use the Apparent Power Converter for the VA side, and apply the power factor yourself.
